Street Fighter saga reaches instalment 6 for PlayStation this year

Due for release on 2 June 2023 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Street Fighter 6 will feature three game modes as well as 22 fighters, including seven new ones. Confirming this, after an initial leak, is Capcom itself, who had already presented two new characters (Jamie and Kimberly) as well as a new 3D open world story mode, simplified controls and live commentary. So many new features that have made fans of one of the longest-running sagas in the fighting game world go wild: the first edition dates back to 1987, and five other main titles have been released since then.

Not only that, the video game has achieved such success that it has crossed video game boundaries, becoming the star of television series (2014’s Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist and 2016’s Street Fighter: Resurrection); Role Playing Games (Street Fighter: The Storytelling Game from 1994, Street Fighter the Miniatures game from 2021 and a limited series of Magic cards called Secret Lair x Street Fighter from 2022); Films (Street Fighter – Final Challenge from 1994 starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li from 2009 and Street Fighter: Legacy from 2010). Plus, a series of animated films, anime and manga. There is even a Street Fighter slot machine, as read on casinosicuri.info.

PlayStation Universe has seen the passage of many other series of the famous video game and endless crossovers: from those that have seen the fusion of characters from the Capcom world with those of SNK and Marvel (X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Capcom vs. SNK, for example) to lighter titles, such as Puzzle Fighter and Pocket Fighter, where the characters are in super deformed versions and the setting is cheerful and playful. Also, Street Fighter X Tekken, Namco × Capcom, Street Fighter × MegaMan, Power Rangers Legacy Wars, Super Smash Bros.Ultimate, Fortnite × Street Fighter and many more.

Returning to the next scheduled release, Street Fighter 6 will be released seven years after the last Street Fighter V and will feature three innovative game modes: Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub. Fighting Ground will feature local and online fighting, with 2D gameplay typical of previous versions as well as an arcade and training mode; World Tour is a story mode, where the player will have to explore a 3D open world of action and adventure with his customised avatar; and finally, Battle Hub, which serves as an online lobby mode.

The gameplay is based on the Drive Gauge, with game mechanics already existing in previous Street Fighter titles (such as Parry, Focus Attack, EX move, etc.) that encourage player creativity, including through the use of super combos (such as Ryu’s Shinku Hadoken, Shin Hashogeki and Shin Shoryuken). With the second Closed Beta, fans have already been able to preview the ongoing developments and progress in the implementation, and producer Kazuhiro Tsuchiya himself is very satisfied.

“It is rare…” said Tsuchiya “…that games come to market with everything the development team wanted to include. There is always some sort of compromise to be made or ideas to be discarded due to budget, timing and resource issues. But on this occasion, regarding the fundamental aspects that Nakayama wanted to include in his dream project, it’s as if we didn’t have to make any kind of omission or compromise for the game”.

The aim is to create a title that can capture the attention and interest of even those who are not fans of the fighting genre, taking inspiration from the legendary Street Fighter II. A challenge that so far seems likely to succeed. We shall see…
